Sarah Donner, an Indie folkpop musician from New England really took me by surprise with an overwhelming amount of talent. The album, Fossil Of A Girl is quite the musical masterpiece for many reasons. There are lots of artists out there with talent, and it takes a lot to stand out. I’d say the vocals on this album are strong enough to convince me this lady has a gift for music. As if that was not enough, she plays the piano and guitar on the record as well. I’d say musically inclined is a bit of an understatement.

Just as the first episode of a TV show, to give you a taste of what the series will be all about, Sarah opens her album with a song titled, “The Pilot”. This song gives you a taste of what’s to come for the rest of the album. First off, her vocals are extraordinary. Her voice is incredibly easy to listen to. It’s the tone of voice that can put you in a good mood, even if the lyrics are depressing. Her voice is smooth and she sings with a lot of feeling and emotion, so you can hear the story she’s telling through the sound of her voice. On top of that her high notes are gorgeous. Basically, no one is going to turn it off after hearing the first track. They’ll definitely be in suspense to hear what is next. And what is next you ask? It is the title track, “Fossil Of A Girl”. I was taken aback by the lyrics immediately. They tell a story, and are full of depth, rather than just the bad rhyming you hear in most mainstream music these days. She has such an indescribable uniqueness to her voice, and it really shines in this track.

Track four, “Knocks On The Door” was the next song to really catch my attention. I hear a bit of Ingrid Michaelson in her writing here musically as well as lyrically. The harmonies in the chorus are simply mesmerizing. The song as whole, from composition to lyrics and melody is just very well done. This goes for “Summer Home” as well. This is the seventh gift on the album. Again, these lyrics really kept me focused on the meaning of the song. This song just shows what a true artist Sarah Donner is. To put it simply, it’s just a really beautiful track, and the violin adds a lot to it.

Here’s a little change of pace. So, all these beautiful, sweet tracks, and then here’s “Bitches You Can Steal My Shit” totally taking me by surprise. The change-up is actually just what the album needed. A little variation is always perfect. I love the entire message of this song, about people not being able to change you. I love the attitude bursting from this track. It is perfect. Then, just when I thought that was crazy enough, there’s a Ke$ha cover in the mix? Believe it. “Your Love Is My Drug” is track number 12. Ke$ha should watch out, because Sarah went ahead and made this song 100% her own. Hearing her rap the voices definitely brought a little smirk to my face. It definitely has a twist to it. The best part was the bridge, because it’s sweet to the ears, and then quickly becomes hilarious. Is there any song or style this gal can’t do?

In a nutshell, Sarah Donner can write, play, and do it well. On top of that, she’s not just talented in one department, and can do a variety of styles and sounds, all sounding just wonderful. The entire feel to her style is peaceful, happy, and even sometimes slightly humorous. She’s definitely the full package when it comes to musicians, and the world should keep an eye out for her.

Review & Photography By: Matt Nistler

Typically when a major label artist heads out on tour, the main goals are to fill arenas to capacity and plug the band’s latest singles with the primary focus of boosting album sales. He Is We’s “Getting Back Up Tour” followed no such formula; making it all the more special. The intimate 11-date tour featured the Republic Records band playing a stripped-down set at smaller venues along the Western United States, and wrapping in the band’s home state of Washington at the end of the month.

It has been a year of ups-and-downs for He Is We. After flying high with the success of the band’s acclaimed debut album, My Forever, which debuted on Billboard’s Heatseekers Album Chart at #6 and spawned two hit singles “Happily Ever After” and “All About Us (featuring Owl City)”, vocalist Rachel Taylor would suffer from health issues and temporarily leave the band. Upon her return, the other half of the duo – Trevor Kelly – would depart the band, leaving Rachel as the sole member.

The “Getting Back Up Tour” marks Rachel’s first time back on the road in nearly a year and her first tour since the lineup shuffle. It was evident that the now-solo-project still was unfamiliar territory as Rachel introduced the band saying “We are…well, I guess, I am, He is We.” Rachel was not alone on stage, however, as she brought longtime friends along to fill out the sound. It wouldn’t surprise me if He Is We doesn’t stay a solo project for long and some of these members join permanently.

I had the opportunity to catch the Denver, Colorado date of the tour on April 25 at The Summit Music Hall’s Moon Room. The performance was quite humble, in a small, dark, corner of the downtown Denver bar/venue. The set would feature a backdrop of Christmas lights and plants that Rachel would admittedly proclaim were purchased at Michael’s Arts and Crafts earlier to jazz up the set. No lasers, projection screens, or flames would be found on this major label band’s tour.

As He Is We worked their way through their catalog of songs (including fan-favorites such as “All About Us” and “Happily Ever After”) it became increasingly clear that the tour meant just as much to Rachel as it did for the fans. Between songs Rachel would talk with fans and wear all of her emotions on her sleeves. At one point, while discussing the betrayal she felt following the band’s shakeup and her health issues, she even paused and began crying on stage.

The sympathetic room, of mostly teenage girls, quickly shouted out “we love you, Rachel!” It was an inspiring moment of fans connecting with Rachel on not just her music, but on a personal level. The band promised to return the love, by meeting with all fans in attendance after the performance. There were surely hugs abound.

“Getting Back Up” serves as more than just a name and more than just a tour. This was 11 days of therapy. A chance for Rachel to get back out on the road and open up with fans, and for fans to connect with their favorite band in an intimate setting.

It should come as no surprise that He Is We’s upcoming album will follow a similar path. Rachel recently explained: “This next album is a makeup of the chapters the fans have seen me go through. It is my ‘thank you’ to each and every single prayer, tweet or email sent my way… I have never felt so connected with the fans. They have truly become family to me and I owe them everything.”

Look for He Is We’s as-yet-untitled second album later in the year on Republic Records.

Caitlin Smith had the opportunity to catch up with Cartel vocalist/guitarist Will Pugh to discuss the band’s fourth studio album, “Collider.” Will explains the origin’s of the album’s name, the process of writing and recording without the support of a record label, and the balancing act of pleasing long-time “Chroma” fans, while still exploring new musical territory. Check out the full interview (including your fan-submitted questions!) below.

Caitlin Smith: Hey! How are you today?

Will Pugh: Fantastic actually. How are you?

Caitlin: I am really good. Glad to be able to sit down and talk with you. I want to go ahead and start off with talking about this new album and new single and all the exciting stuff that is going on with you guys at the moment.

Will Pugh: Yeah it is a pretty exciting time right now.

Caitlin: What was the writing and recording process like for this album?

Will Pugh: We really took our time with it and didn’t rush anything even though we kind of wanted to at first. We wanted to have it out by last year but that would have been pushing it entirely because the songs weren’t there. Being out on tour we were able to let the songs breathe instead of forcing it in the studio. This is the first time on an album where we had absolutely no help in the studio, I engineered the whole thing. All we had to do was come up with the parts and I was tracking them. So having that process there was a lot more of an influx of ideas this time around. People didn’t feel like they couldn’t speak up or that they were censored by producers because sometimes that happens. If you are by yourself you are going to be a lot more open and honest about it than if someone else is in the room and you have to do a self critique and that is kind of what it is like when you are making a record. Not having anyone there really allowed us to say what we felt like. “Dude, that sucks.” Or “That is pretty lame, right?” It is easier to let ideas flow and get to the best possible end. So we are really excited about that and we knew we wanted to keep it raw. We were trying to make sure each track that got recorded really got to be heard and that helped us out a lot with dynamics. We really to make sure that when a part was supposed to be quiet, it got quieter; it is a novel concept but a lot of records today are just LOUD.

Caitlin: Can you tell me a little bit about why the album is called Collider. Where did that name come from?

Will: Well, basically, I am a science nerd and there has been a lot of talk about the Collider over Europe or whatever and it isn’t named for that but…this is going to get super nerdy, sorry. I have been studying particle physics. Not like trying to quiz myself or anything, but just learning the concepts, really. So, anyway, the Collider sort of represents two forces coming together to create something new and also destruction and breaking down barriers and blah blah blah. Mostly we just liked the creative friction that was caused in a good way while making this record and we just thought it sounded like a cool name. So it is heavy and deep at the same time.

Caitlin: What are some of the biggest differences between making an album with and without a label?

Will: Labels these days, I don’t blame them, they are a business and trying to make money, but they want every song to be just a knockout track and a hit. That just isn’t the way records are made. Not every song can be radio material or a single. Being able to put the songs on the record that we wanted to was really the biggest difference. Not that we had songs in the past the we didn’t put on the record because labels told us to, but those conversations come up and songs turn out differently than they would if you left them to their own devices.

Caitlin: Do you have a favorite track off of the album?

Will: Each song has its own character and dynamic. That is what I really noticed when we recorded them, how they all took on their own lives. I would have to say if I had to pick though I am excited for people to hear a song called “Mosaic” and another song called “First Things First.” They turned out really cool and I believe there is a lot of stock Cartel stuff in there that is the best stock Cartel stuff we have done in a while. I like this album because we really pushed the envelope with this one and I think every track shows how we like to branch out in different directions.

Caitlin: What songs were the hardest to write or sound exactly like you wanted it to?

Will: Ah, the biggest struggle. Probably a song called “Sympathy.” Joseph [Pepper] wrote all the music and then I wrote the lyrics. There is always a disconnect when you write music like you are implicitly thinking about how the vocals will go on top of it or at least some general idea. Joseph has written songs for bands in the past so he knows how to write songs and he has these ideas in his head but he doesn’t sing. So when it came time for me to write down my ideas and send it to him he’s like, “Is this it…?” So, he thought it was kind of lame and we did end up with a compromise on it and it turned out better than both of our original ideas for the song. We cared about that song so much and wanted it to be awesome and we all had a really strong opinion about it so it just took a lot of ironing out. Now it is one of my favorite songs to play. I think we will always want to play that song live because it is very technical.

Caitlin: What made you pick “Uninspired” as the first single? Do you believe it is an accurate representation of the album as a whole?

Will: Ehh, I don’t know. Like I said the album is diverse and I don’t think any song has a song that is like it on the album. That song was not what I thought we were going to release first, actually. We released it out to our friends and other people in the industry that we trust to get some feedback and what to do with it and most of what came back to us was to put out “Uninspired” first. I was like, “Really?” The song is good but I didn’t think that would be peoples’ first choice. I like the song, trust me, musically it has the same vibe, I feel like these songs on this record are more like Cartel than we have done in a while. I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised by it. Some of the people have compared it to Chroma, which for us is like our Pink Dragon, it is impossible to replicate. The fan reaction to that one was crazy and launched us into success, but it was a bar that we set and it’s like, well, shit…so we are always trying to figure out what about that record people really enjoyed and trying to do it without replicating songs. But to hear people say that about this record touched a nerve. I will say it doesn’t have the sort of “Q” and “A” sort of thing at the end. There is like blending of lyrics and other songs and things like that which we have actually always done, this is just more apparent. We don’t have like a final track that is all crazy and looped out and we don’t use much electronics on this record, I think like one song. It is very organic.

Caitlin: You have been together as a band for a while now, what are some moments in your history that really stand out for you?

Will: When we were growing up MTV was always the big thing and if you were on TRL you were “famous” and had made it. Blink-182 was on there and guys like that were on there so we had to do it. By the time we did it, it had lost a little bit of its charm but doing that was a checkmark we had when we started the band when we were 15. That was a big one. Touring with New Found Glory was HUGE. We have looked up to them since we started the band. I would say those two things are the big ones.

Caitlin: Are there any big tour dates for fans to look forward to this summer?

Will: We are definitely going to be on tour. We will be doing a sizable tour starting in May.

Fan questions:

What is a day in the life on tour like for you guys?

Will: Boring. People don’t understand it is not a rock star life. It is fun though. Usually we wake up earlier than you might think, drive for like six hours find food that we haven’t eaten 100 times on tour. Get to the venue, handshakes, load in. Sound check. Load in. Wait. Wait. Wait. Play a show. Break down. Meet fans. Find a bar. That is what we do.

What music and TV shows are you into right now?

Will: Currently my wife has me watching The Biggest Loser with her, which is always touching. Other than that Modern Family is always on the TiVo, South Park. I actually just caught up with Homeland and Newsroom.

Favorite and least favorite song to play live?

Will: Favorites are usually songs that we don’t play anymore or rarely play. I really like to play “I Will Hide Myself Away,” from our second album. It’s funny we actually call that song ditty because that was the initial name for it. Georgia is another one of my favorites. Least favorite…shit, I don’t know… that is tough for me. I would say one I don’t like playing live only because it is hard for me to play would be “Write This Down.”

Can you describe the new album in three words?

Will: Do you really think I can do that with how long winded this interview is? Uhh, 3 words…one would be “heavy” and the others…“musical indulgence.”

Thank you for your time!

“Six Tips For Making The Most Out Of Prom”

Prom. What many teenagers spend their high school years looking the most forward to. Selecting what friends to ride in the limo with, the hunt for the perfect dress, making sure a great theme is voted for and most of all making it a night to remember. While there has been movie after movie on good proms and really bad proms, The Sound Alarm wanted to bring you some advice that doesn’t require a Hollywood budget. We enlist the help of The RunAround, who just released a new single entitled “Annie Can’t Wear Heels To Prom”, to give you tips for making the most out of your prom.

1. Getting The Date: Be sure to ask your date out in a special way and to make sure to have something special for your date. Whether its flowers or a unique corsage, get something to make them feel special. Chocolates wouldn’t be a bad idea either as a snack on the way or for later.

2. Dress To Impress: Your prom only comes once and you have to live it up and look good doing it. When Colton went to his prom he wore an all white tux, with nice white shoes, a white top hat to go with it and a cane. “I was the best looking one there.” said Colton. Also try to find a way to match your date and stand out as a pair.

3. Ride In Style: When going to prom you want to show up looking formal, GET A LIMO! Limos are actually pretty manageable if you have friends to cut the cost with. At Colton’s prom he rented a stretch Cadillac limo, when he showed up everyone’s jaw just dropped. Prom is a major part of anyone’s high school career. DO IT BIG!

4. Take Lots Of Pictures: You want to take as many pictures as possible with your friends. High school is only for a short few years it may seem like it drags but once your out time flies and you lose contact with most of the people you once knew as your closest friends. So, take lots and lots of pictures to remember the good times.

5. Be Careful What You Eat: The food may be tasty but eat the wrong thing and your perfect night is ruined with you in the bathroom the whole night. Eat what you think looks good and stay away from seafood since it can be easily messed up and pasta to avoid stains!

6. After Prom: Always try to have a good time after prom too. Just because prom officially ends doesn’t mean the night has to. Prom night is the one night where you HAVE to go all out with your friends. Live the night up and have a great time!

Need a little inspiration for prom? Take a listen to The RunAround’s new single, “Annie Can’t Wear Heels To Prom”, below.

With many shows renewal status still unknown and the announce of new pilots to come soon, it’s clear what will be watched next fall is on the minds of many. Police procedural, guilty pleasure reality show, best new drama? Who knows what the fall season holds. The Sound Alarm turned to The Ventia Fair to share with us their six best ideas for TV shows. Some of their ideas will make you laugh while others actually are some good ones with plans for merchandising. One things for sure, this six picks is a must read!

1. BENNY – If I made a television show it would be called Benjamin Faulkner Santoro and would be all about me because I really like things that are about me. It would only ever portray me in a positive light, though, because I don’t like when people don’t like me. All of my flaws and weaknesses would be left on the cutting room floor and I would look effortlessly handsome in every episode. Despite this, I would still manage to be a very compelling character. Audiences and critics alike would laud the show’s gritty realism and call it “TV’s sexiest drama”. The show would rerun on FX and USA forever and I would have a great catch phrase that would sweep the nation and that nobody would ever get sick of. In 10 years, this catch phrase will be so deeply engrained in the fabric of modern society that nobody will remember where it came from but everyone will use it every single day.

2. MR. CHARK – The thing about television shows is that you have to make them very good so that people will watch them and then other people will give you money. I have a few friends in ‘the biz’ so I know all about it. In order to make a very good television show, you have to spend the big bucks. My television show would be like the Home Shopping Network except it would be an actual store. This would engage people because people like to buy things. I have a few friends that work ‘retail’ so I know all about it. The show would have a very large budget, all of which I would spend on buying calculators, batteries, and trailers. Then people would get to watch other people buy those things if they came into the store. Everything would be overpriced so that I could make the maximum amount of money. This would be good for the economy since I would have lots of money and everyone else would have calculators and batteries to be smart. Some people would have trailers so they can bring things to other people. The general idea of my show is to improve America. I would eventually win a Nobel Prize probably. Follow your dreams and may Mr. Chark bless America.

3. MIKE ABIUSO – I figured in order to have a successful television show I would need to put all my eggs in one basket and bring in the big guns. Yes, the big guns meaning all of everyones favorite things compiled and crammed into a 25 minute show that airs every 3 hours on the hour. “What are everyone’s favorite things?” you ask? Well funny you bring that up because it is very safe to say that everyone’s favorite things can be separated into two nice and neat categories. One being 6 Flags Great Adventure, and two being the adventures of ‘the Eggman’ at 6 Flags Great Adventure. Now I don’t want spoil all the action because now that you forced me to think up this brilliant idea I am going to follow through and make it happen. Let’s just say there will be a snappy ass theme song that will only leave your head if you put a bullet through it along with a ton of plots loosely based around thrills, sex, coasters, zombies, and most importantly sexy breakfast scenarios. To be continued!

4. JOE BROWN- The thing about TV is that it’s a great platform for education. TV, if used properly can combine learning with FUN! Who said learning can’t be fun?! My TV show would be a documentary/entertainment show that explores the mystery that is snakes, and how though they are similar, they are not trains. I’m an expert on herpetology, so I know a lot about snakes. I’m also a train fanatic, so I know a lot about trains. For example, there are 3 characteristics that make a snake a snake: 1) they have no arms or legs, 2) they eat food, and 3) they don’t talk. Trains don’t fit the second criteria. Coal is not food, it is dirt. My program would run 24 hours a day on the train/snake channel, and during peak hours it would just be a live stream of a train with a snake conductor. This show would surely win multiple grammy’s for its score, which is written and performed by Mr. Chark. I would live narrate the entire series and provide fun facts on snakes and trains and the differences between them.

5. CHRIS CONSTANTINO- My show idea is based on my real life. I’ll probably call it “Chris’ World” or maybe “Chris’ World”. Whenever anyone comes over to my parents’ house, my dad makes them watch 80′s hair metal music videos that he’s saved on the DVR. There is no room for anything else on their DVR because it’s full of music videos and concert videos of bands like Kiss, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Poison, RATT, Twisted Sister etc. My show would have those playing on mute with my dad narrating over it, telling me that my band should be more like the bands in the videos. He has a few scenes that he especially enjoys showing me like a vocalist pretending the microphone is a smoking gun, guitarists throwing their guitars to each other, or any scene where there are hot chicks. Occasionally my little brother would appear on the show and ask why we always are watching 80′s music videos. That’s when we would cut to commercials or porn.

6. ASSPOOP- Hey, everyone! Asspoop here. If I were to create a tv show, it would essentially be an animated series about a struggling high school accounting teacher who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. He, feeling that he never realized his full potential, turns to a life of crime and enters the dark world of embezzlement in hopes of securing a financial future for his family after his seemingly inevitable death. Without spoiling too much, he eventually loses at embezzlement to me because I’m the best embezzler there is and his family ends up cold and hungry and homeless and dead. This is what we in the embezzlement business call being “polished off”. I polished off his family. He goes to prison and I successfully embezzle everything everywhere all of the time. More important than the show, however; are all of the merchandising opportunities that come with a successful show. From a merch guy’s perspective, the possibilities for such a groundbreaking show would be endless. White suits, calculators, fraudulent paperwork signed by the members of the cast, booty shorts and of course T-shirts and wristbands. Wow. What a fantastic dream!

————————————————————————————————————————————-

“Six Perks Of Being In A Band With Your Family”

Siblings, many have a great reparations and many have a not-so-great. Luckily for fans of Pennsylvania’s own The GoAround, brothers Alexander and Anthony have a loving relationship. Spending normal family time, living together and being in a band together these brothers have only strengthened their bond. Curious as to how being brothers effects their music, The Sound Alarm asks them the six best things about being in a band with your family.

1. Together: You don’t have to travel to get to practice. At least for now. We live in the same house so we can set things up and practice without the hassle of leaving by a certain time or forgetting something at home.

2. Anytime Practices: You can practice anytime. Also because we live together. It’s so nice that we don’t have to call each other up and organize a practice. We can just say, “Wanna play?” and head down to the basement! It’s so great to be able to play whenever you want AND not have to play alone or to a CD.

3. Understanding: The unique bond that translates musically. Since we are able to play together so often without restriction, we really have grown to understand each other musically. We are often able to anticipate chord changes and dynamic changes without reason just because we are each so familiar with how the others mind works musically. It’s amazing but rare to find someone who is so easy to jam with.

4. Shared Experiences: The fact that we’ve shared the life experiences behind the songs is definitely a plus. My songs will always be super emotional for me. Whenever I sing one of my own songs, all of the emotions that went into writing it come back to me because I am reminded of the situation that inspired it. Being brothers, we experienced many of those inspirational moments together (both good and bad) so when we play the songs live I am not the only one who is deeply moved by the feelings that are provoked by performing this music. It is quite a unifying experience.

5. Beneficial Sibling Rivalry: People aren’t as taken back when we fight because sibling rivalry is such a common thing. When you see the drummer and the guitar player of a band hashing it out, you will usually see people trying to break it up or reason with them, but we all know that when you are fighting you want to finish! Since we are brothers, people rarely want to get involved. As funny as it sounds, this is a good thing because we get to swing and yell until we aren’t angry anymore, which helps us not to hold grudges or harbor any malice. We actually had to re-record our album once because all of the files were on my laptop which got destroyed during a fist fight we had! We have our moments, but we actually get along really well most of the time, haha. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea about us! Sibling rivalry is an age old thing. Just look at Oasis!

6. Brotherhood: Being brothers helps things to go smoother in the long run because it makes it easier to forgive each other when things go wrong. If a band member ruins a show or makes us late or something it is often easier to just kick them out or tell them off than to deal with it rationally. When you’re brothers, though, you’re stuck with each other! It sort of forces you to get humble and let it go, which is really a good practice to get into.
